Red Fronted Macaws are one of the species that John & I agree is one of our favorites around here. We started breeding Red Fronted Macaws in 1985, the same year we started raising Hyacinths.
Red Fronted Macaws are considered the smallest of the large macaws or the largest of the small macaws. They are about the body size and weight of a large Yellow head amazon, except that they have long tails.
The babies personality is more like a big macaw, rather then that of the small macaws. They are sweet, affectionate, playful and are great talkers. One of the first years we raised them, the baby Red Fronts all learned how to say " Look out below ". Then they taught all of the other babies in the nursery how to say it.
Over the years we have enjoyed introducing Red Fronted Macaws to many of our Bird Shops and Pet Stores. We always hear high praise for the babies. They are very plain up to 9 months old, except for the little red spot on their face, and then they start to go through their first molt. The beautiful red/orange feathers are always a delight to see coming in on their foreheads and bend of their wings.
Red Fronted Macaws make excellent family birds. They seem to accept everyone in the
family willing to hold them and spend a little time with them. Their voices are clear and pleasant when repeating their favorite phrase.
When raising the Red Fronts we always enjoy the ones we wean for our retail customers. Their first flights are usually graceful, as oppose to a crash like most of the birds. After a few trial flights they then start to make the nursery their own private flight path. With their controlled flights from the top of one cage, to another and then usually to the top of John's head.
